Shooting Sports: It’s not as easy as it looks

For my sports assignment, I chose to cover a Wayne State University’s Warrior softball game. The Warriors played Davenport University Wednesday, March 28 at home. During this assignment, I learned many things since this was my first time covering a sports story. I found it very difficult finding angles, camera settings, and a story. Overall, I tried my best, but I know that I have a lot of room for improvement.

The first problem I ran into included finding the right angles and locations on the field to shoot. I had a huge problem getting into an area that allowed me to get a good shot and stay safe at the same time. I began shooting through the fence, but realized that I would never get a really good glimpse at the players if I stood behind a diamond shaped fence the entire game. The fence was not my friend at this event. Every photo I took included a fuzzy green smudge in the box. When trying to move, I thought that maybe if I stood in the crowd with the fans, I could zoom in my camera and get a good photo. It turns out that standing in the bleachers to get my photo was a poor judgment call because when I zoomed in to get my photo, the photo was very blurry and not the best. The action was not focused. Eventually, I had the umpire allow me access to the field and I shared the space with players.

The next problem I ran into involved my camera settings. I knew I needed a high shutter speed because of the action, but I had to level out the amount of light so my picture was not overexposed. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what to land on because it was a cloudy and rainy day. I was also concerned about the rain entering my camera. Thankfully, it had stopped raining prior to coming to the game.

Overall, this experience was tough for me much like the others have been, but if it is not challenging, then you most likely aren’t learning. The one element that benefited me the most during this assignment was having other photojournalists to help me along the way. I brought two other classmates along for the assignment and it really did make a difference. I would advise every future assignment to encourage classmates going to events together because you can bounce ideas and knowledge off of one another. As I stated before, this assignment was not easy for me, but I rolled with the punches.
